The Great Pyrenees is a loving and loyal guardian and companion but will however fiercely defend its territory when invaded by predators. Their first charge was as a guardian of the flocks in the Pyrenees mountains. The Great Pyrenees is easily trainable. The bond that is usually formed between owner(s) and their Pyrs is one that will be treasured for a lifetime.
The Great Pyrenees is intelligent and has the ability to size up a situation and respond accordingly.
The Pyr is very accepting of other animals, especially when raised with them from puppyhood.
They are especially good with children and possess an unending patience and tolerance.
Despite its massive size, the Great Pyrenees is easy to care for and feed. Plenty of water and shade should be available at all times. A weekly brushing and a bath every now and then will ensure a healthy, white coat. Regular clipping of the double dewclaws is also a necessity. They are one of the longest lived of the giant breeds with a life expectancy of about 11 to 14 years.
The Great Pyrenees has enjoyed great recognition due to the excellent selection efforts of the French breeders and those of other countries also.
Todays use of the majestic Great Pyrenees includes that of companionship as well as working with livestock. They are also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and as Chien de Montagne des Pyrenees. There are many guardians of the flock - the Italian Maremma, Hungarian Kuvasz, Tibetan Mastiff, Anatolian Shepherd and Polish Tatra among others. However the Great Pyrenees exhibit the qualities of beauty, courage and nobility that truly make them great.

We take our breed and breeding program seriously!

 

Our kennel has produced Great Pyrenees from some excellent American bred lines and we have currently expanded our efforts in continuing with some superior European stock from both Sweden and the Netherlands. It is hoped that through these efforts the American genepool will receive a blend of old bloodlines that have not been seen in over sixty years. Our European stock is both F.C.I. and AKC registered.
